Special Educational Needs

We recognise the importance of helping all children achieve their full potential; emotionally, socially, physically and academically. We ensure they are fully included in all school activities, seeking external support and facilities when needed to ensure that we are meeting their very individual needs and providing an environment in which we all flourish.


What are special educational needs?


Children learn at different speeds and in different ways. Teachers take this into account when they organise children’s lessons. But some children still find it much harder to learn than others of the same age and may need extra help. This may be because they have difficulties with:


 

  • Reading, writing, number work or understanding information
  • Expressing themselves or understanding what is being said to them
  • Organising themselves
  • Understanding and following rules and routines
  • Making friends or relating to adults
  • A medical condition
  • A sensory need such as a difficulty with seeing or hearing

 

These children are said to have special educational needs. (This does not include children who have trouble keeping up because their first language is not English.)


At Woodford Green Primary we treat each pupil as a unique individual, and tailor the education we provide to their needs. The school's policy for special educational needs follows the national Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice. This was updated and implemented in September, 2014.


Parents who feel their child may have special educational needs should contact the Inclusion Manager or the Headteacher to discuss their concern. It may then be deemed appropriate to contact outside agencies for further assessment to be made and to recommend a particular programme for the child.


Children who have special educational needs may need extra help with learning either in the classroom or in small group situations. The Educational Psychologist visits regularly to talk to parents, children and teachers.


‘Special educational needs’ relates not only to those requiring extra help because of a measure of difficulty but also to those who are more able. Small groups may be arranged to cover an aspect of learning in more depth, or extension work may be given in the classroom.


The Woodford Green Special Educational Needs and Disability Policy is based on the SEND Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years (2015).


The Code of Practice provides statutory guidance on duties, policies and procedures relating to Part 3 of the Children and Families Act 2014 and associated regulations and applies to England. It relates to children and young people with special educational needs (SEND) and disabled children and young people.
